Academic Issues

Need some help with academic issues? Dr Matt worked for several years as a psychologist in the university system, at James Cook University and as a Clinical Psychologist at the Queensland University of Technology. He is well aware of the struggles students face so he can advise and offer support with academic matters such as special consideration, deferrals and withdrawal from units. Please be aware he cannot guarantee a positive outcome.

The stress students experience often significantly impacts their academic performance and is often triggered by assessment deadlines such as financial expenses, overcommitment, family expectations and workload.

What Is Stress?

Stress is the body’s response to handling a challenging situation. Hormones are released, and these manifest as psychological stress. Some stress can be a great motivator and is normal but having too much on your plate can be hard to manage and and can massively increase anxiety. This then can often have a negative impact on your academic performance which in turn can cause more stress such as depression and anxiety.

Symptoms and Signs

These can include shaking, accelerated breathing, fast heart beat, sweating, crying, flushed skin, pacing, procrastination, sadness and crying. These are also symptoms of the “Fight, Flight, Freeze” responses our bodies use to deal with stressful situations. Your body is preparing to run away form the stress or fight it with all you got or not do anything in case of failure. You may also experience less patience than usual as well as irritability or a sense of isolation.

Cause of Student Stress

Living away from home, unknown environment and family support so far away are common for new students just starting out. These factors in addition to the pressures of study understandably spike students’ stress levels. Despite trying their best, sometimes students don’t get the results they believe they are capable of based on their academic history. However, there is often a legitimate underlying issue which can be impacting a student’s academic performance. Dr Matt can help to identify underlying issues which may be impacting a student’s academic work.

Another source of stress is being in charge of your own finances which is, for some students, a new an unknown that has a big impact on their life. Additionally, you also get the big questions such as, “What you are going to do after your studies?”, or “What your career choices have you made?”. You may also experience your first serious relationship. These common questions appear to relate to pressures of expectations around life plans which could lead you to feel trapped and pressured.

Stress Management Help

Having a plan to help you navigate through your academic life and studies that covers significant areas of your student life can really help with reducing stress levels, back to feeling great. Additionally, if you are having issues with substance abuse, eating and weight management, depression/anxiety, problems relaxing, or homesickness, family issues and bereavement, then Dr Matt can help.
